Amazon.co.uk Review
From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits of The Little Mermaid in 1989 it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured a "magic" that had been dormant for 30 years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand", Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull and a flounder. The lyrics and music by song-writing team Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering 1991's Beauty and the Beast into cinemas. A modern Disney classic. --Keith Simanton

1 out of 5 stars The Little Mermaid... an over rated one for sure.   August 22, 2010

No offence intended to anyone who loves this film, but this is one of my least favourite Disney films and least favourite of the Renaissance era Disney films.

One main reason is the protagonist, the way I saw it, Ariel was a shallow teen angster who falls in love with a guy in 5 minutes, humilates her father when she has all the free time in the world, drags her friend into situations he's uncomfortable in and gives up everyone who's ever cared for her for the sake of a hot guy. :/

She has no real reason to be so fascinated with the outside world and want a different life to the one she has under the sea, compared to say Belle from Beauty and the Beast who was an outcast in her village, or even Melody in this film's sequel.

All in all, a very weak and shallow film, I reccomend skipping it and sticking to other films from the era, ESPECIALLY Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Tarzan.

Yes I have seen it - more than once. Just because it's for children is no excuse for such a poor plot. And the characters with their huge overgrown eyes look like aliens. It creeps me out. Thank goodness my kids are too old for this drivel now. Their favourite Disney was Fantasia, I'm pleased to say. Where did Disney go wrong after the Jungle Book?

5 out of 5 stars A Nice DVD   February 5, 2010

Well, I can only tell you that I have bought this DVD because of the music video "Ashley Tisdale - Kiss The Girl". I haven't found it in the WWW and even not in the shops in my city. So I bought it by Amazon. I don't need the DVD-Video. So I can't tell you anything about it.
Besides you can see that I have bought an NTSC-Version. I know from other DVDs that NTSC is better than PAL when the original comes from America. The same goes when the original is PAL. Sometimes there isn't any possiblility to buy it on Amazon.com, so buying it from '.co.uk' or '.fr' is often possible.
